Create a Memorable Christmas Display On a Budget

by | Dec 1, 2023 | Crafts, Decor

Make your outdoor Christmas decorations stand out without spending a fortune! Learn how to decorate with giant peppermints & gum drops without breaking the bank. Bring cheer to your home and the whole neighborhood with our tips and tricks.

What makes an outdoor display memorable is the “wow factor” that you won’t see at your neighbor’s house. Oversized decorative elements, extra lighting, and an unexpected surprise (like faux icing along the roof line, wink wink) will leave onlookers in awe of what they see.

It may seem overwhelming or maybe you don’t know where to start… I’m here to help you with that! Read on to see how I turned my house into a life sized gingerbread house, without spending an arm and a leg!

Making a Plan

When you’re goin’ big on your house, you need to have at least the basics of a plan laid out of what you’ll need.

For our house, I knew there were a couple key elements that were non-negotiable, we had to have them!  Things like frosting on the roof line, giant lollipops, giant cupcakes, and lots of colored lights. And all of these items would need to be mega sized!

Here’s a list of all the giant confectionary elements that I added to the house:

  • Peppermint Candies
  • Cupcakes with Sprinkles (of course)
  • Wrapped Lollipops
  • Wrapped Cotton Candy
  • Wrapped Suckers
  • Rooftop Frosting
Drawing of my plan

Let’s get into the details of how I built each item. For my visual learners, I’m including videos for each of these pieces! Let’s Christmas on!!

DIY Peppermint Candies

Arguably the easiest and cheapest of this whole outdoor decorating project, making your own peppermint candies is fast and simple.

THESE CANDIES WORK GREAT FOR STAND ALONE DECORATIONS AS WELL. IN CHRISTMAS TREES, BUSHES, OR AS PARTY DECOR.

FOR EXTRA INTEREST AND FUN, CONSIDER USING MORE THAN ONE COLOR.

All you need are the cheapest paper plates, paint colors of choice, and some clear cellophane wrap. Here’s the breakdown:

Supplies

DIY Jumbo Cupcakes

These were, by far, the pieces I was most excited to make!

Earlier this year, I learned about the art of crafting with Loctite Foam – you can check out my handmade Starbucks earrings using the Loctite as whipped cream, soooo cute!

Before I go crazy telling you about all the crafting potential of Loctite Foam, let me show you how perfect it is for creating icing on a huge cupcake.

This project was incredibly inexpensive…

Supplies

DIY Pool Noodle Lollipops

Remember we talked about wow factor earlier? This is where you can add a big greatness factor and it won’t be expensive to do it.

Here’s the list and video for how to do it…

Supplies

IF THE GLUE IS TOO HOT OUT OF THE GLUE GUN, IT WILL MELT THE POOL NOODLE. WAIT FOR THE GLUE TO COOL BEFORE APPLYING.

ADD ADDITIONAL POOL NOODLES TO MAKE LARGER LOLLIPOPS.

FOUR HANDS ARE BETTER THAN ONE FOR THIS PROJECT!

ADD OTHER POOL NOODLE COLORS AND A VARIETY OF COLORED TAPE FOR MORE VARIETY.

Ok…NEXT!

DIY Wrapped Cotton Candy

It’s not really a gingerbread house without massive amounts of sugar. And what has more sugar than cotton candy??

Here’s how you make your own:

Supplies

DIY Enormous Suckers

Let’s grab those paper plates and paint again! We are making giant suckers for the flowerbed!

DIY Roofline Frosting

Ok you guys, this is the finale… the most epic part of the whole project. You can skip it if you want BUT let me tell you… Nothing makes this life-size Christmas gingerbread house more epic, more memorable, more amazing then the artificial frosting along the edge of the roof.

Here’s what you need:

Supplies

Here’s a few helpful pointers for this project:

THE ORIGINAL PLAN WAS TO APPLY LOCTITE AND SPREAD WITH A SPATULA – THIS DID NOT WORK!

ONCE FOAM IS SPRAYED, IT’S IN PLACE AND WILL EXPAND.

BE SURE ALL YOUR LIGHTS ARE THE SAME COLOR WHITE BEFORE GLUEING. TRUST ME.

ONE STRAND OF LIGHTS (21FT) WILL LINE 13FT OF INSULATION + AN ADDITIONAL +/- 6FT.

Measure your roof line and measure again just to make sure you have the right amount of supplies. This was a big job and TOTALLY-WORTH-IT.

Put It All Together

Once I had a good amount of these decorations made, I began placing them in the yard. (That way it didn’t look like I just had random candy on my house)

I added colorful lights to my bushes, white lights around my windows and candy canes. I also found his great inflatable gingerbread man to really finish everything off.

When decorating your yard, pay attention to the flow of your landscaping. Do you want to line your walkway or driveway? What goes in the flowerbed? How can you elevate some pieces for more visual interest? And remember, you can always move things around if needed.
