How to Make a Patriotic Wreath for 4th of July

by | Jun 8, 2023 | Crafts, Decor

I love the 4ht of July. I love celebrating this great country and with my husband as a veteran, we are like, uber patriotic! So every year, I try out new designs for wreaths because, well, it’s kind of my thing. You may have noticed with all the other wreath tutorials I’ve done? You can check out some of them on our blog, like my Bunny Nest Easter Wreath, or my Spring Wreath Tutorial, or even my bow making tutorial using my favorite bow maker! See what I mean?

A patriotic wreath includes an assortment of red, white, and blue elements. Using things like patriotic themed ribbon, USA style signs, and flowers in various shades of crimson, navy and bright white are all great options to put together a design suitable for July 4th or Memorial Day.

Here, I’m going to show you how I assembled a large wreath using an oval shaped, grapevine form, three different ribbons for the bow, and a heap of flowers and greenery to show off on my front door this season. Read on for all the details.

Pro Tips

Before you dive in, I have a couple tips to share to make your wreath making experience smooth and enjoyable.

  • Remove all the tags before you begin. If you’re concerned that you’ll want to return extras, then just leave a couple with tags on. But for your sanity, cut those tags off while you have some patience to spare.
  • Cut away or remove fake leaves on your floral picks. They never look good. They always look like an afterthought to me. Cut them down at the base as best as you can.

  • When trimming down your stems, try to keep them on the long side to give some space between the head of your flowers and the wreath form. This will instantly elevate your design and look pro.
  • As I always say, biggest to smallest when assembling. When you’re working with pieces that are similar sizes then start working in contrasting colors.
  • Lastly, take a step back every now and again. Make sure the wreath is looking balanced and shaping the way you want.

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s get started on this wreath!

1. Make Your Bow!

I never make bows by hand, I always use my pro bow tool and you can see why in this post here. However, making bows by hand is super easy. Here is a really great tutorial on how to make a bow by hand from Dave’s Wreaths and Things. I think this is my favorite bow tutorial on YouTube, super easy and fast. 2. Greenery

Once your new bow is wired in (gorge I’m sure), start adding in your greenery. I started off with my fern leaves because they’re the broadest ones I had and make for a great base. Be careful with that hot glue! I literally burned myself while making this video HaHaHaHaHa.

3. Flower Time

This is where we get to start seeing all the pretty in the wreath. Again, starting with the biggest blooms and moving down to the smaller ones, work back and forth with your colors, and always, always pay attention to your balance. Maybe you want it fuller on the bottom than you do the top. Totally fine! Just take a step back and look at it from a distance to make sure it’s shaping properly. Sometimes I’ll even turn around, focus on something else completely and then look back at it for a “fresh” look. Stop laughing at me.

Display Ready

Now that all the final pieces are placed and you feel good, it’s time to go hang that glorious piece of USA pride on the door for everyone to see! Take lots of pictures and tag us (@talk2thehands) on social media because I’m dying to see it!
