Make a Fun Thankful Turkey Craft for Kids

by | Oct 17, 2023 | Crafts

This Thanksgiving, make the kid’s table the place to be! I’m going to give you three different turkey crafts to keep your kiddos entertained this harvest season.

There’s a variety of ways to make a Thankful Turkey. By using household items like colored paper, yarn, and googly eyes, you can create some very clever, grateful turkeys.

BONUS, I’ve included free templates for you to print out so that you and the kids can get started crafting today! Let’s get into how to make each one.

Wood Slice Turkey Craft

My favorite of the three, this project can be wrapped up as a package in a simple cellophane bag and twine so you can have them on display ready for the cousins when they arrive.

Also, this bundle would be so fun as a gift to your children’s friends or neighbors. Teachers can use this project for a class party activity or gift to send off with their students for the holiday break.

For my turkey, I used hot glue but if you’re planning on doing this project with littles, then I recommend using tacky glue. Use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process with tacky glue.

TIP: When using liquid glue, remember: Dot Dot Dot (you’ll thank me)

  • Glue the block to the bottom of the wood slice.
  • Open one end of the paper clip and glue to the top of the wood slice.

TRICK: If you don’t have or don’t want to buy wood blocks, you can be like me and use something from around the house. I found a couple legos that worked just fine! (no one will see this part anyway)

  • Add feathers around the block.
  • Cut 1.5″ of red pipe cleaner.
  • Flip the wood slice over and attach the pipe cleaner to just off center of the slice.

TRICK: You can always use paper feather cutouts or colored popsicle sticks in place of real feathers. Especially if mess is a concern or you would like the kids to write what they’re thankful for on the paper feathers.

  • Cut a small triangle out of the orange felt sheet. Attach over the wattle.
  • Add your googly eyes.
  • Cut 2 each 1/2″ brown and orange pipe cleaner.
  • Twist the two colors together and bend to make feet. Glue to the bottom of your wood slice.

How to Use Them

Cut out your Thankful Cards and have everyone write down what or who they are thankful for.

Use the paper clip to display the cards for everyone to read and share.

Some other great ideas for your wood slice turkeys:

  • Dining table place card holders
  • Display food names on your buffet table
  • Recipe cards in the kitchen

Honestly, there aren’t many places I wouldn’t display him!

Paper Turkey Craft

This craft option is great for all ages and I have three different ways to do it.

Option #1: Print, Trace and Cut

With this option, it’s all bout the cutting and gluing and kids loooove that.

Option #2: Print, Trace, Cut and Color

Option two takes away the need for construction paper and adds in some crayons, colored pencils or markers.

For this option, I recommend coloring before cutting out the pieces.

There are two sizes available for you, simply print the one that best fits the supplies you have to work with.

First option for the paper turkey is to simply print out your template, trace, and glue. It’s a super easy option that even the grown-ups will want to get in on.

  • Print out your preferred size turkey tracer template.
  • Trace head and body circles on brown paper and then cut out.
  • Trace and cut 7 feathers on preferred colored paper.
    • I went with red, green and yellow for mine.

  • Trace the beak and wattle. Cut out.
  • Cut out eyes.
  • Glue the feathers onto the back of the body.
  • Glue the head onto the body.

Option #3: Print and Color

Absolutely everyone loves coloring. And it couldn’t get any easier here!

Print out a handful of turkey coloring pages and let the kids, and the adults, go to town with what ever or where ever their imagination takes them!

TIP: Before hanging your turkey, you could have everyone write down what they’re thankful for on the feathers.

TIP: To make a more finished look, you could add a frame or apply glue to the back of the scrapbook paper and mount onto a foam board.

TIP: For a little extra fun, design a costume for your turkey! Is he a police officer, a chef, a fairy??

Write down on the back what your thankful for!

Pom Pom Turkey Craft

Here is another delightful little turkey the kids will most definitely want on display this Thanksgiving!

Now, there’s a couple ways to go about making a pom pom turkey…

  1. Make your own pom poms – Here is a great video tutorial on how to make great looking poms.
  2. Purchase pre-made pom poms and just assemble.

Pre-made poms is the route I ended up taking.

Originally, I started by making my own but found it very very frustrating.

SO, to Amazon I went for some really great furry poms that came out better than I ever anticipated.

Ultimately, it’s all about the experience you want to have with your kids. There’s no right or wrong, we just want you to have fun!

pom poms before and after fluffing

  • Begin by either making your pom poms or fluffing your purchased one.
  • Take your orange felt sheet and fold it in half to give yourself “2” sheets. Cut the corner of the sheets to give you two matching triangles.
  • Glue along one edge of your triangle and attach the second one.
  • Set aside to dry.

  • Using your round tracer (like my plastic cup), trace a circle onto a piece of construction paper and cut it out.
  • Fold the circle in half and cut down the center. Now you have two half circles.
  • Apply glue to the rounded edge of one of your half circles.

  • Begin adding feathers over the glue.
  • Once your feathers are in place, set aside to dry.
  • Apply a small amount of glue to your triangle beak and attach to what will be the face of your turkey.
  • Glue the turkey pom to the half circle of feathers to make a tail.

TIP: Don’t be afraid to really load up your feathers to make a super fluffy tail.

TIP: Get creative and make a fun pattern with fun colors like hot pink or turquoise. A little Talk to the Hands action on display!

Grab a Thankful Card Printable to display with your new turkeys.

Once all the glue is completely dry (remember that blow dryer trick), the kids can have fun playing pretend with their new little turkey pets.
